Frequently asked questions
What is diatomite / diatomaceous earth?
Diatomite, also called diatomaceous earth, is a naturally occurring mineral made from the fossilised remains of microscopic algae called diatoms.
These single-celled organisms lived in oceans, lakes, and rivers millions of years ago, and their silica-rich skeletons accumulated over time into vast chalky deposits mined today from the earth.
What makes diatomite remarkable is its structure. Under a microscope, every particle is riddled with millions of tiny hollow channels, natural pores that act like a sponge. This micro-porous architecture is what gives diatomite its exceptional ability to absorb water almost on contact, then release it back into the air through evaporation within minutes.
At LOTUSENS we use diatomite to make bath mats, coasters, and toothbrush holders. Products where that fast absorption and quick drying make a real, everyday difference.
How does it absorb water so fast?
When you step onto a LOTUSENS diatomite bath mat, the millions of microscopic pores in the stone immediately draw moisture away from your skin through capillary action. The same physics that pulls water up through plant roots. The mat can absorb surface moisture in roughly 60 to 90 seconds, and dries completely within a few minutes in a normally ventilated bathroom.
Compare that to a fabric mat, which stays damp for hours. A wet fabric mat sitting on your bathroom floor is essentially a humidity trap: warm, moist, and dark. Ideal conditions for mould and bacteria to grow.
How do you clean a diatomite bath mat?
Diatomite products are genuinely low-maintenance. Most of the time, a quick rinse under running water is all you need. Here is the full care routine:
Day-to-day:
- Rinse with clean water if you notice soap residue or a film building up on the surface.
- Wipe with a damp cloth if needed.
- Stand the mat on its side or in a well-ventilated spot to air dry completely between uses.
When absorbency slows down (every few months):
Over time, typically after several months of daily use, the microscopic pores can become lightly clogged with soap residue, skin oils, or hard-water mineral deposits. You will notice the mat feels slower to absorb water. The fix is simple:
- Take the mat outside or to a well-ventilated area.
- Use the fine-grit sandpaper included in your LOTUSENS package (400 grit), or any 400-grit sandpaper.
- Rub gently over the surface in circular motions with even, light pressure. A fine white powder will come off
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove the dust.
- Allow to dry completely before using again.
This "refresh" typically restores the mat to near-original absorbency and takes about five minutes.
What to avoid:
- Do not put your mat in the washing machine. It is stone and will break
- Do not soak it in water for extended periods
- Do not use bleach, harsh solvents, or chemical stain removers
- Do not dry it in direct, prolonged sunlight. This can cause warping over time
- Do not use a wire brush or abrasive scouring pad
Is diatomite safe for kids and pets?
Yes, diatomite is safe. It is a naturally occurring mineral with no synthetic chemicals, bleaches, or artificial coatings. The same material — in food-grade form — is used in agriculture as a natural pest deterrent and is approved for use in organic farming.
For home use as a bath mat, coaster, or toothbrush holder, there is no risk from normal handling. The material is non-toxic to humans, children, and pets.
One note worth mentioning: when you lightly sand your mat to restore absorbency, do this outdoors or in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling the fine dust. This is a standard precaution for any stone or mineral material.
Why is diatomite better than a fabric bath mat?
The honest answer is: it depends what you value. But across most of the things people actually care about, diatomite wins clearly.
Drying speed is the biggest difference. A LOTUSENS diatomite mat absorbs moisture from your feet in minutes and is completely dry again shortly after. A fabric mat stays damp for two hours or more. Sitting wet on your bathroom floor, that is exactly the environment mould and bacteria need to grow.
Hygiene follows directly from that. Because diatomite dries so fast, mould and bacteria simply don't have time to establish themselves. Fabric mats, on the other hand, develop that musty smell most people know well.
Maintenance is another area where diatomite is the clear winner. No washing machine, no laundry pile, no weekly cycle of washing and drying. A quick rinse when needed, and a light sand every few months to restore absorbency — that is all it takes.
Eco footprint is lower with diatomite too. It is a natural mineral with no synthetic materials, no plastic fibres, and because you are not machine-washing it repeatedly, the ongoing environmental cost is minimal compared to fabric.
The one area where fabric may wins is comfort underfoot. Diatomite is stone, firm and cool, not soft and plush. If cushioning is your priority, fabric delivers that. But if you want a dry, clean, low-maintenance bathroom floor, diatomite is the better choice by a wide margin.
How long does a diatomite product last?
With basic care, a diatomite bath mat lasts approximately 2–3 years of daily use. Coasters and toothbrush holders, which have lower daily wear, can last longer.
The key maintenance habits that extend the lifespan are: rinsing off soap residue before it builds up, allowing the product to dry fully between uses, and doing a light sanding refresh every few months rather than letting clogging accumulate.
Is LOTUSENS diatomite natural / eco-friendly?
Diatomite is one of the more environmentally straightforward materials used in home products. It is a naturally occurring mineral, requires no synthetic manufacturing process, and contains no plastics or artificial dyes. Because our products last 2–3 years and require no machine washing, they also have a lower ongoing environmental footprint than fabric alternatives that need frequent laundering.
The material is biodegradable at end of life. It does not introduce harmful substances into the environment.
Is the mat suitable for households with young children or elderly family members?
Yes. Diatomite is a natural, non-toxic material and there are no chemical or safety concerns with normal use around children or elderly users. Because the mat absorbs water so quickly and dries fast, it actually reduces the risk of wet, slippery floors compared to a fabric mat that stays damp.
For households where slip safety is a priority, always use the non-slip backing included with the mat.
